Hi, i have just done a defrag which took 9hrs, the problem is that it seems to run for about 2hrs then stops until i move my mouse, what can i do to stop it stopping?

Is there an alternative Defrag programme which is quicker?

I am on windows 98 and always defrag in safe mode.

start-run-type msconfig

go to startup items.

remove all the ones you defo don't need.

go to desktop...right click..propertiees...go to screen saver. turn it off.

turn off antivirus.

now run defrag. should work better.  don't touch mouse.

Hi, Buddy. I would recommend that you download VOPT defrag tool at http://www.vopt.com/ There is a free trial version. I have used it (the upgrade version) for about 12 months now, and it is unbeatable. It may be a bit slow the first time you use it, but after that it will be a lot faster than the Windows defrag. Also you don't have to close down any running programmes to use it. There are one or two other useful features such as the CPU usage monitor. Give it a try.
If it's software you're looking for, I'd consider:
http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp
It's seemingly highly recommended.

Any third party software that you have doing the defragging for you (in place of Microsoft's built in effort) should constantly defrag in the background or at least when you're away from PC so there won't be much issue with it taking 9 hours.
Stevie. Agree that Diskeeper is a good programme. I used it for a couple of years, but I think that VOPT is just that bit better.
d0gsb0dy, I'll happily take your word for it, I'm no expert on either of the two.

With regard to my earlier claim/suggestion that defragging takes place constantly in the background : I don't think that's the case.
I was possibly confusing the fact that that my system permanently has a process running (shows in task manager). This "diskeeper" process is there, not to defrag, but to start the full program at a scheduled time and this defrags once a day for me.

hope this helps
