My Gran and My Mum who both came from Edinburgh had some really funny sayings.  They used to say things like "Dont trust him he's a bigger liar than Cut The Bag" Does anyone know who Cut The Bag was ?  Also if I was out walking with Gran she would say "Take my arm. I mean no harm. I only smoke cigars".  Sadly they have both passed away and the rest of the family haven't got a clue where the sayings originated from.

Cheers

no actual idea what that means but i am guessing "cut the bag" refers to a pickpocket of old times who would cut the bag of coins of ur belt and therefore very dishonest....tho this is a shot in the dark guess!
ON the similar subject my granny to this day still thinks that duddingston loch is bottomless. Its simply not possible but theres no telling her.
I don't know who or what 'Cut the Bag' was, but when I asked the same question when I heard the expression used many years ago I was told: "Cut the Bag was thrown oot o' hell for tellin' lees." (Cut the Bag was thrown out of hell for telling lies")
