Having trouble updating Ad-aware, and am seeing reports that the latest versions are not as good as older ones.
Are there any other recommended free programs which will do what Ad-aware does (or more).
Thanks

Yup. I didn't like the new version of Ad-Aware. I find the interface is really clunky, not a patch on what it used to be. Some excellent free alternatives:

Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
SuperAntiSpyare: http://www.superantispyware.com/

I use both of these programs. They are legitimate (something you sadly doesn't go for all anti-malware programs these days) and they are very effective as long as you keep them up-to-date. They both have paid versions available just like AdAware, but the free versions are pretty feature rich.
You could also look at SpyBot. It has free version available. I used to run it but had difficulty installing one of the recent updates and sort of gave up on it.
Now I run Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware(SAS) free versions along with Symantec Internet Security. Both work Ok although you will find SAS is very slow on full system scan.

Thanks guys.
Removed Ad-aware and downloaded Malwarebytes on my PC and f-in-laws laptop.
So far all seems OK. Nothing found on mine but full scan found 4 malwares on laptop.
Already using Spybot and AVG.
