I'm bidding for something on ebay and in the bid history I see "Bidder 1", "Bidder n" etc, I seem to be the only one with a proper user name. I looked up "Bidder 4" for example and there is no such user id. So is there some sort of anonimous bidding system? I can find no mention of it in the help etc, anyone know?

theres a whole section regarding this matter in the ebay answer centre, a lot more complicated than I thought. have a look but basically to do with shill bidding and similar.
If the item is over £100 then bidders are shown as Bidder 1, Bidder 2 etc. When you look at it you will be shown as yourself, if I looked at it (if I had bid on it) I would be shown as myself and you would be shown as bidder no ?

I think this was introduced to stop fraud - people being offered second chances and the person offering was a completely different seller.

If the item is under £100 it is because the seller has chosen for bidders to remain anonymous but details are shown to you as detailed above.

Hope that makes sense!!

ok thanks all
My work colleague, who is a computer virgin, couldn't believe how cheap the prices were on e-bay.

He told me he had seen something dirt cheap, but he only had 5 days to buy it at that price.

He didn't realise it was an auction site.
