A solicitor is more highly qualified and generally commands a higher salary. However this article suggests the gap is narrowing

I find it can very much depend on the person.

I know legal execs, paralegals etc... who are far more experienced and better at what they do than some solicitors.

Experience counts for a lot, a newly qualified solicitor and a legal exec with 10 years experience can be poles apart.
Just avoid family law as a career - this is the lowest earning branch of the law.
