To greet means to cry - in Scotland

8a - an opening is cleft. ignore the last letter T gives you clef = a musical character.

Many thanks, getoverit,drb & baitress. I get it now. Though how us sassenach( is that how you spell it?) English are supposed to know what greet means, I don't know. OOps, I've not upset the Scots again, have I? Thanks, again. Much appreciated. This is the first time I have tried the Spectator.
