Why do teeth have such sensitive nerves? What purpose do they serve? Why do we need to feel with our teeth anyway?

I thought our teeth only hurt when the nerve was exposed- and that only happens when there is a hole, exposing the nerve. Therefore when we get pain, it is a sign that something is wrong and we must visit the dentist. If you mean the pain you get when eating something cold, again, maybe that is our body's way of saying "I don't like this, it is putting me at risk- sort it out!"
