When I write a "Word" document an automatic spell checker keeps altering the words on the screen to American spelling.

Can anyone tell me how to make the built- in U.K. English dictionary the default dictionary?

No hi-tec lingo please - remember you are delaling with an idiot here!

Manty thanks

Can only comment on Work 97 here, but assume later versions are similar/the same ;

When in Word, select the 'Tools' menu from the top of the screen, Select 'Language' , then 'Set Language' . You should find that you have English (United States) selected, change this to English (United Kingdom). To permanently select UK English, hit the Default button, confirm, then OK.
