have tried everything to stop my dog pulling

Some years ago, I had a german shepherd dog , and she used to pull like hell on the lead, in fact she nearly got me run over by dragging me in front of a car after I had made her sit at the kerb, I tried chokers, halti's, everything, even obedience classes, but to no avail, never did get her to stop pulling,
But take her lead off, and she would trot along side me all day, problem was, her pace was a bit quicker than mine,
But to this day, i swear that she was trying to say, take the lead off and I'll walk with you.

The Halti is a chest harness, priced around �10. It is said to give more control of the dog, as the control is around the shoulders, rather than just the neck.

This is going to sound as silly as it looks but stck with it , it's well worth your patience . When your dog starts to pull turn round and walk as though you're going back home , turn back and carry on the walk , if he / she pulls again repeat , after several repeats you should find the dog stops pulling . Well Z, I've had dogs all me life, and I'm really not claiming to be an expert, but all thats worked for mine is a stamp on the ground and a quick yank on the lead. Dogs hate sudden noises, I stopped mine barking excessively with the dried peas in a pop bottle thing, worked like a charm. Don't smack them tho will u ?

Bigmamma is right; this is the best way and it does work. But, you need at lot of patience and it's no go walking the dog when you are in a hurry because you won't bother with the training then.
Perseverence and patience are always the key with animal training.

A Halti is not a chest harness, it is a headcollar like you put on a horse, so you guide the head of the dog and the rest follows (in theory). It fits over the nose, then does up round the back of the ears which is adjustable so you can fit it tight enough. They do work, but you have to persevere. At first the dog will object and turn somersaults to get out of it, so you need to put it on and get walking quickly, preferably holding a titbit or toy to keep the dog's attention. If you stop the Halti will go slack and the dog will be able to use its feet to paw it off its nose.

A body harness will not stop a dog pulling, you put a harness on a husky to allow it to pull a sled, or a harness on a horse to allow it to pull a cart. All a harness does is to spread the weight pulling over the shoulders, and the dog pulls by putting its front feet forward, so by the time a harness kicks in it is too late - the dog has already pulled forward!

Also a Halti will not 'train' a dog not to pull - it will stop it pulling whilst its on, but you need to train the dog on a collar and lead, and I would suggest what is called a 'half check' or 'combi collar' which is a nylon collar with a piece of chain in it which has to form a triangle if fitted correctly, This allows you to correct the dog without choking it, and you need a jerk and release action giving the dog a command such as 'heel' or 'close' to tell it what you want it to do.

I personally have no problem with check chains (or choke chains as they are incorrectly called) but again they have to be fitted right and used right. There is a right and wrong way to put them on, one way checks the dog and the other chokes it!

By far the best thing is to take you dog to training classes where you will be shown and helped to teach it to walk properly.

My G.S was dreadful at pulling , so I used to tap him lightly on the nose with rolled up newspaper,he responded best of all to the Sunday Sun and very soon walked with me.I think he was a Guardian reader at heart.

My partner always maintains the way to rectify this is, whenever your pooch pulls, just stop dead in your tracks, so he will have to stop too and stand there for a minute or so. Do this everytime he pulls and eventually he will understand, if he wants to go on walks, he has to walk to heel.

BIg mamma is so right. I had the same problem withmy GS. Short lead. As soon as he pulled I turned round and aimed home. When he walked nice I turned round again. I ended up turning round up and down the street for about 20 minutes but it worked in the end just persist it works.

Calm down madmaggot, after all the good advice given , I was only adding a little levity. I have never had a G S and it me that flinches when anyone picks up the Sunday Sun.

I would never ever hit a dog , but people are a different issue.
