The lads (i agree some of them are not lads but in the mid 30s as QM has pointed out) reckoned (imo) their actions would help to highlight their cause. My point was that other have done similar things in the past and not much was made of it.
The only circumstances, Dom, in which a group of criminals with an average age of 35 can be called 'lads' - not to mention 'young lads' - is self-referential. That is, they might call themselves that, as in "I'm off for a couple of pints with the lads." Anyone else so calling them clearly has a (not-very-well) hidden agenda!
I remember the incident as shown on television very well. My impression of seeing the group of boys/men was that they were young. You QM, posted their ages. I accepted that they were not all young. I still see them as young (younger than me) and will refer to them as lads. I dont buy that 'self referential' malarkey. If you see an agenda in this...well....I have work to do...like write to the PM and complain about the unnecessary suffering of fish in our rivers and streams.
Go for it! High time it was stopped, so good luck to you. (Mind you, just like the Queen of Hearts in 'Alice in Wonderland' and your good self, I am using words to mean what I want them to mean, too!)
