Ok, we've all seen odd gloves lying in the street or stuck onto a railing spike but why do we see odd shoes and boots on the sides of roads and motorways? How would you drop a shoe off your foot!! Is this one of life's mysteries?!! One could put together a whole outfit if you looked hard enough - fish an old bra off a tree branch, some dirty socks from under a bush etc....

Hmmm. I hesitate to answer, but I can explain at least one incident. Went swimming with my chums. We were too shy to skinny dip, so we swam in our skvvies. When we got out, there was no sense going home in wet drawers, so we tossed them on the banks. From then on, we boys just went skinny dipping all the way.

I had a friend who was run over by a motorbike once. He suffered only minor injuries, but when he came to be discharged from hospital he realised he was missing a shoe. He went back to the scene of the accident and after a while looking around he saw it - up a nearby tree.

Nearly forty years ago, when I was eighteen, I overturned my Morris Minor 1000 (bit difficult to imagine I know) on an icy bend.

The upshot was that my door was ripped off and I was ejected as the car rolled (no seat belts in those days). I was uninjured and walking about in my stocking feet when the police arrived. They eventually found my shoes in the car (not slip-ons, proper lace-up ones). So it is possible that other items of clothing could go missing at accident sites.

Whilst in a rush to go out (a few years back now) I ran to my car with my overnight bag in one hand and my 'day shoes' in my other. When I got to the car I put my shoes on the roof whilst I unlocked the car. You're already there, need I say more................................................

When I was knocked down crossing the road I lost both of my shoes. They were tightish fitting ones with a buckle!
OK - but what about unwound cassette tapes? I quite often see them by the roadside and wonder why.

they get snarled up in the cassette player and you throw them out of the window in frustration.

Or perhaps: they're Christmas tree decorations waiting for trees to grow up under them. I think the former is more likely, though.
