I have a seven year old bitch Jess, she is a border collie cross and we had her from being a few weeks old and she has always been a bit of a scardey cat. We took her to dog training when she was very young and she was always very scared of the othe dogs (even though her sister was at the same class, by chance!). I was advised by the vet to give her small amounts of rock rose, she kinda grew out of the scared thing but I have noticed this past couple of weeks she has started shaking for no apparent reason, when you distract her, she immediately stops. Should I start giving her rock rose again or is there anything else you could recommend?

I misread your question to start with and thought that the vet wanted you to play Jess rock music. I know that it is a serious problem - but I think a collie wandering along the street with an MP3 player would be cheer most people up.

My second dog was adopted by me when he was 5 years old and I inherited a lot of problems. He liked me but not the rest of the world.

I made the mistake with Robbie the psycho of reassuring him every time he was afraid. This is the normal human reaction. But it seemed that all I was doing was reaffirming his feeling that there was a threat.

I am sure that one of our animal experts will be along to give you some practical advise.

Good luck.

Thank you anyway Wolf....I agree she would cheer alot of people up with her MP3 player, mind you i'm not sure we'd make it out of the front door!
And to be fair she's a bit of a disco diva as opposed to a rock chick!
Just found this, might help, its taken from another site.
I would 100% recommend Rescue Remedy.
Freeway was very nervous and timid when she first came to live with us. I religiously put Rescue Remedy in her water every day, and she relaxed and settled in extremely quickly.

Even now, I adminster some if I know we are going into a situation that Freeway will find stressful.

For a general feeling of calm, I would recommend that you add 6 drops to Millie's water bowl or to her food every day. If you are going to be facing a stressful situation, then give Millie 4 drops on a little piece of bread or a treat.
