I will be seeing my gp about this. Im feeling more tired than usual, dry skin and hair and lethargic. Im wondering if its an underactive thyroid. I know I will need blood tests but I wondered if any of you AB'rs have this and what were your symptoms. Thanks in advance.

a big tell tell sign is weight gain and difficulty shifting it.  also complete sluggishness

A few of us were talking about this in the office and someone suggested a Sea Kelp supplement which helps to speed up your bodys metabolism. I've been taking this for about 2 months and have noticed a difference!  Dont feel as tired (early nights help that too), I've started eating plenty more fruit and veg. Feel great in myself as I was feeling simialr to you Don't know if this helps but might be worth a try!! You can buy it from health stores such as Holland and Barrett.

Fina, I don't know your age, but are you going through the menopause.  I went to the doctors with the symptoms you mention plus weight gain, and had no thyroid problems at all.  I had a long chat with my doctor who said that, unfortunately the menopause can also cause the same symptoms.  I have now had two or three negative tests for thyroid problems as my doctor likes to keep on eye on things.

Thyroid problems tend to make the hair thinner as well as dryer.

can i askwhy you think it is underactive as opposed to overactive. I had overactive thyroid and that showed up after being tested for tiredness all the time , but unable to settle on the go all the time.... so viscious circle ....?
I've had an underactive thyroid, it happened just after I gave birth to my son.

My symptoms were irregular periods, dry skin and hair, feeling cold all the time, fatigue and couldn't think properly.

In most cases an overactive thyroid will make you sweat more, rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased hunger thinning hair, loss of periods and increased energy.

FP. I will be 57 next month,no hot flushes anymore!!! I had an MOT about 3 years ago which showed up as me being aneamic [sp] I was prescribed Fersaday for that. My hair is certainly dryer now and my skin.Although Im taking an AD which makes one tired this is a different kind of tiredness if that makes sense. One good thing,my hair is still thick. Weight gain? Yes:--(.
