My HDD appears to have gone down and I'd like to try to recover some cherished .jpg files on the drive.
I understand there is some free software that I can download to try to recover the files in question.
Would it be possible for someone to provide me with links to the software please.

Many thanks

Not sure if "gone down" is the exact phrase I would have used, but that aside...

When you say gone down what do you mean??? drive recovery software is for recovering files that have been deleted, not for getting data off a faulty hard drive, to do that is far far more complicated and normally requires very specialist equipment!

Also to use any drive recovery software you will need another, working, computer that you can either put the drive into or attach using an external hard drive caddy. if you have a facility to do this then do it and see if you can read the drive and copy the pictures off.

sorry to hear that your cherished pics have gone ,maybe for good .but that's the beauty of backing up to an external hard drive or burn to cd/dvd,both very cheap to do.
there not lost.in the event of a problem like yours

I know the word but I can't wquite get my tongue round it ....

this is a good file recovery tool

but it won't fix a broken disc

and as for free software ... I don't know of any I'd use on a disc of mine

Thank you all for your replies. The drive is not showing in My Computer. I'm borrowing a caddy today to see what can be read from it via another PC. Thanks again

if the disk is spinning
bashing it with a block of wood is the last thing you want to do under any conditions.

the heads pivot on a delecate mechanism 1/1000 of an inch above the platters which store the info
bashing is only going to increase the chance of damaging the mechanism/head

if you can see the disk in explorer - or any files at all ... your best bet is software

If the disk isn't spinning and /or doesn't show in explorer
on odd ocasions .... if everything else fails ... and you are not going to send the disk for professional recovery

put the drive into the coldest part of fridge (musn't freeze though)
if it works ...
you'll have about 30 mins - and probably no repeat performance

there are some other options ... but not for the faint hearted
