I found this today ...

Kirsten Flagstad (greatest soprano EVER)

and Lauritz Melchior (almost greatest tenor EVER)

singing duets from Wagner (greatest composer EVER)

(duets from Lohengrin, Tristan, Gotterdammerung, and Parsifal)

I played it in the car on the way home, and it is AWESOME !!!!!

If anyone has found a better classical CD than this recently, I'll eat the box.

erm..It IS the greatest IF you love opera.......which I don't. Give me some Brahms,or Dvorak,or Chopin...and I am in heaven.
Unquestionably it is Nigel Kennedy's recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto, with Klaus Tennstedt and the LPO. This is the most wonderful rendition of a deeply emotional piece of music. At the end of the main violin solo, the orchestra joins in, gently, and the whole thing sinks into shimmering beauty, it brings tears to your eyes.
I am listening to Dvorak's American Quartet at the moment.....sigh.
You like a bit of brahms and list dont ya parsty.

Yoodeleieee
Gimmeee some heavy head banging rock anyday JJ
Sorry Jogger, but Maria Callas was the best soprano, and Jussi Bjorling the greatest tenor.
Totally agree with jason.p regarding Jussi Bjorling.
His duet with Robert Merrill, from Bizets"The pearl fishers",is the best ever

I did qualify Melchior by saying "almost" the greatest ...

I'd agree Bjorling is in there, and he had a very wide repertoir.

I've got a CD of Bjorling singing Donizetti, Verdi, Ponchielli, Gounoud, Bizet, Massenet, Mascagni and Puccini ... equally masterful in each role.

But !! ... for sheer ability to project his voice above the orchestra, without losing any vocal quality, I think Melchior has the edge.

There is a line somewhere between greatness and genius. Vocally, if you want to hear where greatness becomes genius, you have to listen to Kirsten Flagstad.

Maria Callas ... she was good ... no, she was great ...

... but simply not in the same class as Flagstad.
