can any-one tell me who is responsible to pay for a work uniform, this has just been brought into the work place

It's up to the employer to decide who pays for it. In my previous job we had uniforms which the employer paid half and we paid half which was taken out of our wages over a period of, I think, 6 months.
I should have said it was only �10 or �15 per month, so wasn't missed that much.

i think it will depend. If it is like a tesco uniform or a nurses uniform then why should you pay? Hwever, if you work in a clothes shop and they want you to wear the clothes from the shop for example, you would be able to wear those outside in your non working life too, so perhaps that should be 1/2 and 1/2
My understanding is that Easyjet cabin staff pay for the privilege of wearing bright orange uniforms. Their pay is cr@p and unless they moonlight as those people putting out cones on motorways, they cannot wear it outside work.
As other posters have said, it will vary. At Next years ago, uniform was NEXT clothing, which you bought and chose yourself, but at a discount. But you could wear it out of work too.

When i was front line staff at my current employer (an airline), the airline gave you a full uniform consisting of a certain number of each things, each with a "life", at the end of the life you could return it and get another one. So the box of tights were every six months, the shirts 1 year, the winter coat 3 years etc.

If you needed a replacement sooner, you wanted extras, or if you lost something, then you had to pay and it came out of your wages.
I may be wrong as I'm no tax experts but next time you fill in a tax return I believe you can claim for uniform expenses - if the clothes are an identifiable uniform and cannot be worn for social occasions.
Depends on employer's instructions. If staff pay, the cost is often spread thru income.
That's correct, providing you are expected to wash it yourself, i.e. your employer does not have a washing machine at work made available for the purposes of washing staff uniform in.
If the company care for and appreciates the employees then that company will pay for uniforms.I worked for a company that paid for full uniforms for the office staff and working clothes for the fitters working in garages and out on site.they also paid all laundry bills.the company realised that a well dressed member of staff was an asset and a good advertisement.
