Why do a lot of things freeze when put on the shelves of my fridge - bottles of coke, veg, meat etc. It's only set on 2 out of 6 and things like milk etc in the door compartment don't freeze or even seem abnormally cold. It's a built-in fridge on top with a separate freezer underneath.

On a recent holiday in a rented cottage, your problem was the comment in the cottage log book. On this occasion I noticed the wire sensor had become detached from the freezer unit and left hanging beneath the freezer unit. As a consequence it froze everything in the fridge. It took 30 seconds to lodge it back in its place and subsequently fridge worked properly. Hope you solve yours.

That's interesting Brigader and thanks. Where would this wire be? In case I didn't word it clearly I'm talking about a standard built-in fridge with a kitchen unit door on the front and a standard built-in freezer with a separate unit door underneath. I'm not sure how the 2 are separated in the middle but was wondering if the freezer was not properly insulated and the cold was going up to the fridge?
The wire referred to is the temperature sensor mechanism. It may have become dislodged (as happened to Brigadier) or it may just be nadged. Try turning the dial back to 1, if that's what it takes to warm up the actual temperature inside the fridge then sobeit. If that doesn't work, it needs a new sensor.
There is absolutely no chance of excessive leakage of heat to the (colder) freezer below.
'Cold going up to the fridge' is an entertaining concept.

As I wrote I thought I know heat rises and cold sinks and someone would think I'm silly!
You need to make sure that there is nothing touching the back of the fridge - that is where the cold is coming from and I have often had the same if something has been pushed too far back.
