Whilst changing a rear wheel i noticed that i had a broken spring. Is it good practice to replace both the rear springs at the same time or can you get away with changing just the one?

Hi, I have just replaced mine ( Booth) Price 2 springs 40, Not a bad job to do,
I should have added, replace the 2, otherwise you will be putting a strong spring with a weak spring.

cheers for your reply.

how did you go about changing them? the trusty haynes manual says you have to disconnect the driveshafts from the diff end before removing shock absorber screw and anti roll bar?

can you not just remove the shock absorber mount and antiroll bar bolt and carefully lower the trailing arm down with a trolley jack. Or even use a pair of spring compressors to compress the spring and just lift from car.

Out of interest where did you get your springs from? i often use eurocarparts.

Cheers

dave
Hi Dave, I live in Lancs and use Blackburn Brakes, I have a E36 Coupe, I had to remove the speaker trim from the back parcel shelf, remove the inner trim within the boot (Each Side) Jack one side up at first, Bottle jack under the Beam lift well up then as you say a trolley jack to lower the Suspension arm you do not need to compress the springs,
clean all areas before replacing & make sure you locate the spring END IN THE RIGHT PLACE, any probs, ask me or whoever.
To add davros, check EBay, but there will be postage, where are you? what price have you been Quoted? I will see If I can help you with the price.

just spoke to EuroCarPart and they have springs for 17.50 each which i thought was fairly reasonable. I have found e-bay overpriced on many parts and some people pay more for second hand stuff then you can actually buy it new.

Will cha.nge springs on Friday if the weather is a little kinder
