My son is 19 and has acne on his face - he has tried all the lotions and potions, but nothing seems to keep them at bay. He did see our GP who prescribed long term antibiotics (tetrocycline) - I know that these can cause weak bones long term, so thats not an option.

I recently made him an appointment at a local beauty clinic, after reading about dermabrasion - they suggested something similar costing around 600 for a full treatment.

He is healthy and fit (a personal trainer) and his diet is quite good (for a 19 year old !!!).

If anybody out there can suggest a good product, it would be much appreciated.

Mr Jules used to suffer from acne too. He used to get some antiseptic wash called Hibiscrub from the chemist. You have to ask at the pharmacy for it as it is not on the shelves. Wash face morning and night with it, it won't totally cure it, but it should help.

Thanks very much Jules - I'll get him some.

As soon as I saw your question, I was reminded of this story in this mornings news. It's an absolute tragedy, but shows even medication we don't think of as dangerous can have terrible consequences.
has he tried taking supplements like cider vinegar working on the inside rather than out

What a terrible story Junar - I am suspicious of all drugs that are prescribed and look everything up before taking them.

Some Doctors just dish them out like sweets.

dermobrasion will do nowt for your son - it will simply resurface his skin and the spots will come back. what you need to do is go back to your gp and get him sent to a dermatologist - they are skin experts and know much more about treatments than your gp will. i took a drug called roaccutane - not nice, some horrendous side effects - but stopped oil production in my skin, cleared the spots and 'reset' my skin. i no longer get the boils and sweat and yuck that dominated my life and made me hate myself. also your son is 19 and shou;d make up his own mind about treatment - he is an adult after all. send him to a dermatologist on the nhs - much cheaper and more effective than some 'beautician' shaving layers off his face. good luck x
as far as i'm aware, the only issue with 'bones' is if you take it whilst pregnant the baby could/ would develop with yellow/grey teeth. i've not read anything about long term use causing weak bones, i'd be very interested to know where your information comes from as i've been taking oxytetracline for about 15-20 years.
it may be that your son would benefit from a relatively short course - maybe 3-6 months - to settle his skin down. i very much doubt that 6 months of it would cause any problems, and may just do the trick for him.
i've tried every over the counter product known to man over the years and nothing has had any effect. if your son has a serious case of acne he needs specialist treatment.
Has he tried Sudocrem? if not then i strongly advise that he does,it worked wonders on me when nothing else did.
By long term I don't think the doctor means for years... my daughters friend had awful skin in her teens and 20's and it was only after taking the anti-biotics from the doctor that it cleared up....The secret is not to give up after 2 weeks - but To stick with it then it starts to work.. And then you stop taking it... The other thing that works is find a beutician that uses a steamer and basically declogs all you pores manually...I know teenagers that have had good results with this method...
i always suffered as a teen, and have recently found MD Formulations, acne kit, Fantastic. Quite expensive but i found it cleared my spots within days and if i use it properly everyday i dont get spots. hth

Thanks for all the replies on spots - he will definately try some of the lotions that have been mentioned, but he won't be going down the long term antibiotics road.

Much appreciated.
