One last try to see if anyone can solve this clue in quiz I want to post today!!!

"but the sub-lieutenant was found in a lady's headdress" (6)

Answer will be a hat, compilers fond of anagrams but may not be the case here!!!

i looked this up and it is a hat but can't see how it relates to the clue, any ideas!!???
Until 1871 a cornet was the most junior rank of cavalry officer - subsequently renamed sub-lieutenant.
Chambers - cornet :- an old form of lady's headdress, a cavalry officer, later a sub-lieutenant
