I live in Brighton, and if I look directly out to sea, which would be slightly South West, there is a bright star a little 'to the right'.
What is it?
thanks.

I suppose I could have phrased it: "That bright star up there, is that Venus by any chance?"
Or, "It's a long time since I've seen Venus, is it at all visible in the southern sky?"
thanks anyway
She's been very bright for a few weeks now, she's lovely, isn't she :o)
You just have to put up with it, Richard. Explaining that that 'star' is Venus has to be done as often as explaining that man is not descended from apes but is an ape. They're regulars.

Yeh Richard, you just have to put up with it, you poor thing!
I have no problem being compared with an ape, and i do apologize if my frustration at responding once again to this question has caused offense.

In November Venus and Jupiter were in close proximity, that really did look nice.
Depending where you live, it could also be the mirrorball on Brighton Pier (I still want to call it the Palace Pier - showing my age now).
