I think we are in Wales and have the iron railway bridge as Pontycafrau.
Any ideas if this is right and what the first clue is: name of the castle town?

NB. Spoiler coming ......

I think you mean Pont y Cafnau (locally known as Pont-y-Cafnau).

Another site has said that the village was Usk but I can't confirm that Geraint Evans (?) was at school there. That might have been his Primary School because I think he went to Burton Grammar. Looks a s if the Roman fort and settlements were at the same place? Bit tricky this one.

Geraint Evans is linked to Pontypridd. Following the directions in reverse I come to Carleon which had a Roman settlement (near Newport). Does this help?
TopCat2, you may be right. I tracked Geraint to Pontypridd but didn't do all the backtracking details - I had considered Carleon and Raglan.

The reason for Usk was that it loosely means 'water'. But that might be the one 'further down'. Certainly Caerleon had the fort but I can't place the castle in the 12th century (unless that is a refernce to Usk again).

Any chance that Geraint went to school in Caerleon?

Would be nice if it was Caerleon because of the link with King Arthur!
