Hello TWR, Nkakamasembe, Hymie and alavahalf. I got my car back on 21 January, just over a week since it was first left in the garage. The garage fitted 7 O-rings and a fuel filter kit without success, fitted a shut-off valve without success and finally fitted a control relay. Problem cured, without ever finding the cause!
Thank you all again for your advice. The garageman's final words "No harm to you but I hope it's a long time before I see you again"! He didn't really mean it.

Hi Derrynoose, It makes it all worth while when all that tries to give out help gets a responce like yours, Safe Driving.
Since the garages admit that they have not cured the fault I suspect that for some reason the fuel tank breather has become unblocked. Keep all the advice from ABers in the back of your mind, should the problem reoccur. Take particular note of any excessive in-rush of air when un-doing the filler cap to refuel, which could indicate a blocked/restricted breather.

I would be concerned at the extras added to the car (control relay?), if not reliably fixed, more problems lay in store for you and the car.
If you are happy your car is working fine great.
HOWEVER I have a feeling not enough effort was made to diagnose your problem and repair it.
Whats the effect of this modification on your insurance ?
