All I want to know is how much these would cost, so I know how much to ask to borrow. How hard can it be to find out?
No-one wants to give me any idea without coming round to measure and quote. All I want is the cheapest, bog standard french doors fitted. Are we talking 500? 1000? 2000? If they asked me the price of a pedigree norfolk lesser spotted tripehound I would be able to tell them a rough price and recommend a breeder, but they all say the same - not till I have been and measured!

Or would it be better to find someone who would get them from B & Q or somewhere and fit them for me?

You can buy basic Double Glazed French Doors from Wicks for around 400 depending on what size and then add on fitting. My friend has just paid 575 for hers fitted. That will vary depending on where you live.I know how you are feeling lankeela as I have been looking for fitted wardrobes and have been having the same problem, like getting blood out of a stone isn't it.
We had Everest to do lots of work to replace windows and doors done 9 years ago by a firm that went bust straight away so no guarantee. The pvc french windows 190cm wide by 230cm high were 1827.61 . We live by the sea in an extremely exposed position and they have been brilliant. Sorry cant remember if that was discounted price or not. It's a starting point for you anyway. Hope this helps.
I think moonshadow has the right idea although I just asked a local joinery company and they were brill - had french doors and a window made and fitted for 800

Thanks all, think I will ask around and see what neighbours have done.

Moonshadow, was that 575 fitted and provided by a company, or did she buy them and get them fitted? Sounds about the price I had in mind.
Go to Magnet Trade and ask them to suggest a tradesman to install for you.
They can offer various styles in either Hemlock, Hardwood or PVC
The hardwood and pvc are more expensive but they do arrive factory glazed and have a multi point locking system if security is an issue.
Generally, it should be more cost effective to use a local reputable tradesman rather than a large national company.
Depends on the size and building work,if any, as to the overall cost.
Look in your yellow pages for a local company and go and visit - take the measurements for a rough estimate.

The issue is that the breeder currently can't work out whether it is the pedigree norfolk lesser spotted tripehound that you actually need. This type of tripehound is only available 75cm long from nose to tail and 27cm to the shoulder. Although the fitter can lop a bit off the length of the tail on fitting, that may not do the job.
Because everyone wants one of these, breeders have production lines running that produce them in bulk so prices are low.
However the much rarer Suffolk greater-spotted tripehound can be bred-to-order as a one-off. It comes in any size you want, but costs three times as much.

So that's my breed of doors then. Always wondered. Sitting here and it's blowing a hoolie out there... look no draughts!
Sorry I haven't answered earlier lankeela. Sue bought her doors for 400 from a place called Wicks which is similar to B&Q. A local chap who mainly repairs double glazing fitted them for 175.She had a quote from one of the large companies for in access of 1,000.Troot28's suggestion looks good to me, you will find local small business much cheaper. Naomicorlett's tripehound sure was expensive and no guarantee, what a ******.
NO NO these have guarantee it was the first ones we put in 10 years ago that were rubbish and the firm went bust. These are brill ( I am just trying to justify horrendous price) But I'm worth it!!
