Thank you Linzi84 and Little Lady for answering my query on nails. Is there any long term damage to the nails if i have gel nails?
Is 40 the average price to pay? That's what they charge in the salon near me and they claimed there is no lasting damage but i trust you guys out there more than them because you aren't making any money out of me. Thanks

Hey spodge, 30 - 40 is about average, but i wuold expect a decent job for 40 so make sure they're done to your satisfaction. They do weaken your nails in the long run unfortunately they may peel and become very soft underneath though you will only notice if a nail comes off or your having them removed for good as they will be covered by the false nail. Them saying they do your nails no harm is rubbish, take it from an ex-beauty therapist who used to do them they can and do. Them telling you that is just a ploy, i know i used to blag people to if they were too worried and it would sell them bad i know but we were made to sell as much stuff as poss. for commision as the pay was appauling.

I have really strong nails, and they are quite long anyway so why I decided to have them cut off and fake ones applied I don't know.

Anyway..... After the falsies were removed my nails were about as strong as wet tissue paper, it's making me gag thinking of it now but I could bend my nails right back on themself, I was scared doing up buttons, flies, etc in case it pulled my entire nail off, but after a few days they got stronger and now they are just fine.

However, no only do you get weak nails but you get a really unattractive ridge on your nail that evetually grows out.

I would advise, if you can, grow your nails as long as poss and get them maincured but don't get acrylics!

Oh, I was reading your post about the gel tips though and they sound cool.  If you get them let us know!

Hey splodge24, well I guess it depends what area you are in. I am in the North and charge 25 for a full set of gel nails. As far as damage to your nail goes, if they are properly applied I have not experienced a great deal of damage at all, the nail may be slightly weaker and also feel weaker as you will be so use to having the hard gel on your nails, but it will certainly not affect the growth of your nails. I have worn the gels for about 5 years now, and my own nails have all grown up underneath so therefore when it comes to having my infills done, I file and buff them down and apply more gel but instead of a tip it is my own nail, the gel keeps them nice and strong if you want to do it that way.  But a lot of people like to have them removed once their own nail starts to become visible and have a whole new set of tips put on.

Cheers guys!

I only want them short term as i just can't grow my nails...it's impossible!!

I live up north but 40 is the cheapest i can find!

I'll stay away from the acrylics!!!

I'll let you know if i get them done this week, thanks again for all the good advice!

Has anyone tried Broadway Fast French Nails?  They are really good, you put them on yourself with a type of superglue - you dont have to file the nail bed or anything first, just cut them down to the right size and file them, file your nails short as well, and stick them on .. although be careful not to stick your fingers together.  They stay on for at least two weeks and you have enough in the pack for two goes at 5.99 a pack from Boots or Superdrug.  Get the clear French ones, not coloured, as they will look more natural.  After a couple of weeks they will just 'pop' off when you are making the bed!! and you can just stick another one on.  To get them all off at the same time, use 'Get Em Off' also from Superdrug, or Tesco.  Then put plenty of baby oil on your nails.  So cheap and they look just as good as 40 ones.
