does anyone know where i can obtain the wire which operates the locking catch on a up /over garage door. It is braided steel with a plastic covering .

Getting the wire isn't hard at all...but you'd have to cut it to the correct length and attach the ends.. which isn't that easy with steel wire.

Your best bet is to find the manufacturer of the door and contact them for spares
a lot of garage doors are made by henderson, why not google the name to find a stockist and ask for their advice /help
i have a rigging company near me - they had the crimping equipment & plastic piece to make up the cable.
Steel cored plastic covered washing lines are commonly available. Should do the job.
