went out in car yesterday and did a journey of about 15ml when i stopped at destination .icould smell a burning smell from the back wheel. when i touched it it was very hot. i released the handbrake to check if wheel was locked but i could move the car easily.on the way home the wheel did not heat up at all. any reason for this would be appreciated

Sounds to me like a partially siezed calliper or cable. best to get it checked professionally!
possibly the handbrake hadnt released properly
Are there disc brakes or drums on the rear of your car? In either case the shoes or pads were binding. You may have inadvertently left the handbrake partially on. Your handbrake cable may have partally seized. Your rear brakes may need an overhaul. Get a garage to look at this if it happens again.
