If I presented a cheque to the bank this afternoon, how long has the person who has sent it got to cancel it so it wont go through!? It's a long story! Thanks

Cheques used to take up to 5 days at one time, but that seems to be down to 3 working days now;but new laws are making it quicker.
If we assume that you paid the cheque in today (Tuesday) then if the person wishes to stop the cheque, they woud probably have to do so by Friday at the latest.
However,I am assuming this to be the correct clearance period.
If the person who gave you the cheque put their Cheque Guarantee Card Number on the back, they CANNOT stop the cheques as this constitutes fraud.
I hope someone else who has more banking experience can add to this (or correct it).

Thanks Mr Veritas for your reply. I banked it yesterday so fingers crossed it will go through ok!
You are welcome.
I also believe that most banks charge for stopping a cheque,so this might discourage the person who issued it from doing so too?

Its for 60k so they'll probably think it worthwhile if they decide to! Bit of a long story but they owe my brother's company a lot more than 60k and they're playing silly *******, but atleast that cheque goes someway to settle what they owe us - providing they don't stop it!
