Who thinks Dr. Who is or has been scary. We are constantly being told of people watching it from behind the sofa. Is that an urban myth. My kids dont find this series scary in the least and i did not find the previous series in the least bit frightening.

It depends - my nephew was screaming when all of the aliens appeared in episode 2, but he is only 3.

I enjoyed episode 3 the most - the Charles Dickens one - I thought this was the scariest yet (but I didn't hide behind the sofa)
PS - I may be behind the sofa when the Daleks appear - I always used to be there when they were on previously
I think it used to be more sinister.... Maybe not scary?

My cat will confirm that it can be scary at times, since she benefited from the sausage I dropped when the hand shot out of the coffin early on Saturdays episode.

Maybe with flying Daleks the sense of peril will increase in the coming weeks!

When I was little (God that makes me feel old - I'm 38) Dr Who scared the living daylights out of me. Though we didn't have video/DVD's or computer games then. So kids do seem to take things more for granted now.
Dr who is a little scary for the younger folk but nowadays kids are more de-sensitsed when they see real (un-editted I may add!!) gory scenes on the 6 o'clock news!
I got freaked out a bit by the Bertie Basset look-a-like episode back in the eighties. Stuck in my noggin ever since, not sure why. Maybe my immense disliking for liquorice. Didn't end up behind the sofa though.

we live in a very different time where kids are exposed to so much more tv that they become immune to a certain extent ie mtv, cartoon network etc etc.

when dr who was around the 1st time there was only 3 channels and was screened early evening.i remember hiding !

When Dr Who was around first time, there were only 2 channels Matt (BBC2 might have actually started by then, but I think it was only on for a couple of hours a day), but I confess I hid behind the sofa when the Zarbies came on (as my brother never lets me forget!)
I was very scared on saturday.  Ok, so at 31 i'm a bit big to get behind the sofa, but definately remember a tom baker episode where his assisstant was put in  a tube that did have me behind the sofa (and a very nice mock leather plasticky sofa it was too)
I possibly don't know exactly how scary the daleks are because my sofa is next to the wall. There is no behind to watch it from.
I actually his beside the sofa away from the door - at least I did a couple of decades ago. I knew things couldn't come out of the telly but was convinced that things invading Earth would come through our front door. Don't know if that was enhanced by the fact that some of the episodes were actually filmed in my (then) home town of Ealing - looking back I can now say - "Hey, the Autons bursting out of Rowses! (which is now M&S)"
