i'm stuck on the last few of the guardian's christmas crossword:

What must i turn up to get western man to perform about-turn (10) W H - R - U - D - R

WHEREUNDER? and if it is, anyone know why?

61 would be invisible with change of heart (8) I N - E - R - D
INTERRED? and if it is, why?

start of the pharisees (5) A- I - E
ARISE or ALIKE? and why?

AND FINALLY,
backward boy, a donkey, with fire N - S - O - E (2, 5)

NO STOVE? can't believe it's that but what is it?

any help appreciated.

W He re u nder
Arise ...hidden in clue

No s moke
last one: No Smoke?

no s is son backwards for the boy part of the clue, and 'moke' is a donkey.
no smoke .... son << + moke
Inferred ....change from Interred
Sorry kayakamina but I have to disagree with you :-( You haven't changed the 'heart' only the third letter. 'Invisible' is 'infrared' and the middle two letters are changed to give 'inferred'.

many thanks to all you clever folk: kayakamina, rose maybud, kettledrum and GRM.

but i still don't understand the WHEREUNDER one. or at least the NDER part of it. can you explain?

oh, and i didn't know that invisible was another word for infrared.

no smoke is clear to me but 'arise' is a bit weak as a clue isn't it? since it doesn't indicate that it's within 'pharisee'.

but many thanks to you all. i've learnt something today
Here I am, late to the party, after quaffing a very couple or four of pints down the Old Mitre (Hook Norton "Twelve Bells" - cracking stuff). Anyway:

WHEREUNDER: The NDER is from RENDER (perform) which has U (turn) stuck in it.

INFRARED: Invisible isn't another word for infrared, it is a quality of infra-red, by definition really - if it is visible it isn't infra-red. I'm sure there's a scientific definition somewhere of what range of wavelengths are considered "visible" and at lower frequencies, which are "infra-red" (before moving onto microwaves etc.).

For ARISE: The insertion indicator is simply the "of" in the clue - happens sometimes.

Oh dear, this "Bah Humbug" T-shirt is going to need a wash before next year.

Toodle pip!
