My spellcheck speaks only French!
'Help' suggests Tools, Options, Spelling, Language. But the dropdown menu offers only French.
Any ideas, please?

Go to Start/Control Panel/Regional & Language.

It should be set up for English UK.
start typing everything in French would solve the problem.

Or for a slightly more constructive answer you need to install the English dictionary, but you haven't said what the spell checker is in.

if it's office you need the original CD and should be able to install the correct language from that.

Thanks, terambulan, done that, been there and it is set up in English.
And thank you ChuckFickens. French not good enough! It's in Outlook Express - I have Office, but I don't have the original CD.
So, back to the drawing board.
it's normally the office spell checker that outlook express uses, do you have the same problem in word?

This machine is new to me. Word now seems to be within Office (Microsoft Office Word 2007)

Does this make sense?

I see what you mean now! I have checked and, no, I don't have the problem in Word - All in English there.
Your Windows set up seems to have been installed in French. Windows would need to be re-setup in English UK.
