Why Does My New Windows 10 Laptop Have Spellcheck Disabled?

I had a Dell laptop with Windows 10 installed and it did a spellcheck on everything I typed. Unfortunately it came to an early demise after being dropped on a stone floor and a Dell expert could not even get basic information from my hard drive.
I have now bought a refurbished HP Elite laptop but there is no spellchecking available.
When I go into settings it just says disabled with no option to change it. I do a lot of typing but also make a lot of mistakes so is there any way to get the spellcheck working?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Spellcheckers usually work within individual programs, rather than from an operating system. So which software are you using? (i.e. are you using Microsoft Word for word-processing, Firefox for web-browsing or whatever?)
When you say your spellchecker doesn't work, are you referring to one in a specific program, either a word processor, e-mail or browser? My version of Windows 10, which is an 'operating system', doesn't appear to have a related spellcheck setting.
Snap Chris. I was too slow this time!

I am using Chrrome but the spellcheck disabled message is coming up in my Windows 10 settings and cannot be unchecked. I m going to check out your link murraymints, thank you.
You shouldn't be going into your Windows 10 settings. You should be going into Chrome's settings:

Click the three dots (top right)
Click Settings
Click Advanced (at the bottom of the page)
Scroll down to 'Languages'
Check that 'Language' is set to 'English', and not to 'English (United States). [If you need to change it you'll have relaunch Chrome before proceeding]
Then go into the Spell Checking section and turn it on.
(The Windows spell checker - which is showing as 'disabled' - only works in association with Microsoft software which has a level of integration with Windows itself, such as Microsoft Word. It doesn't work with third party programs, such as Chrome, which each use their own spell checkers)
