What is the meaning of "get their feet under them" in the following sentence?

She could think of few safer places to get their feet under them than this private, gated estate owned by a good-natured foreigner.

The word picture attempted by the author is one of a new born animal attmpting to stand for the first time.  A quiet, safe place would be best for that young one to attempt to stand and stabilize themselves.  Another description would be that of a boxer that has been felled by a blow and is trying to regain his upright posture... again, to stabilize himself to resume the conflict...
