You will find that your eyes will get rather dry and sleepy, and that it will be difficult to take your lens out as they will be dried out and stuck to your eye.  Taking your contact lens out will cause redness and soreness and will be abit tricky to take out but can be done with a little more patience and care than usual.

What do you mean, for too long? Are we talking using contacts for a number of years? Or the same pair of lenses for more than one day?

I have found that one day use ones, left in for more than about 12 hours, make my eyes unconformfortable, and make me want to blink more/shut my eyes to prevent them hurting.  I am usually able to feel the lens in my eye whereas usually  i am unaware of them

I also find them a little harder to take out, and would need soothing drops after removal.

I was recently told by the optician that if you sleep in one day lenses that they can bond to your eyes and a trip to A&E is needed to remove them!  Although I have never left them in the whole night, i have left them in for half hour naps and find my eyes very sore after that!

have slept soundly an awoken to find myself in a lot of pain and quite blind with one day contacts thoroughly stuck to my eyes - plenty of water and some gentle persuasion (a thumb nail forced under the edge) finally removed them

ive slept in my contacts several times (accidentally) and in the morning i just found my eyes very dry and hard to open, but not a lot of difficulty taking them out.  i wouldnt recommend sleeping in them anyway though lol are there any longterm effects?

Long term, your eye sight MAY suffer, as when you take your contacts out, you allow your eyes to breathe - and lack of oxygen might cause long term problems.
