Can anyone explain why when you wake up in the morning your breath is aweful and need to have a mouth wash as soon as possible

'During the day, movement of the tongue and cheeks dislodges food debris and dead cells, and these are washed away by saliva. While we are asleep our tongue and cheeks do not move much, and the flow of saliva is reduced. The food residues stagnate in the mouth, and mouth bacteria rapidly break them down, releasing an unpleasant stale smell. Breathing through the mouth when sleeping tends to make this worse.'

Thanks for posting that snagged. I've often wondered about that myself.
If ever you want to check your breath odour quotient - try the following -

Select a length of skin - the underside of yout forearm is usually a good place.

Stick your tongue out as far as you can, and lick along your arm for a few inches.

Let the skin dry and the sniff - what ever odour, or not, you get - that is what your breath smells like today.
Sorry, should be 'then sniff ...'
