Could they be something to do with trapeze?

I guess it could be a term used in the theatre in bygone days.

The Kirby family founded the world's first company dedicated to the art of performer flying. They provided the flying effects for J M Barries new play 'Peter Pan' in 1904. Joseph Kirby took over the business after his father George's death.
