It doesnt actually have a specific size - a city block is the distance between consecutive streets, running east-west, or avenues, running north-south.
Most "blocks" are easily walked. If it seems like you are on a lrger one, a taxi will take you. They have a minium fare of $2.20 and can't refuse you, so if you feel lazy, you're talking 1.50, which is cheaper than a bus!
Immortal, I can recomend the AA Spiral guide to new york as inexpensive, honest and very practical. Best of all it's cheap and can be found at WHSmiths. It answers all questions such as yours and also has a map. I regard this series very highly and can personally vouch for this book a a guide to a short break in the big apple.

Manhattan block sizes are pretty regular - they're rectangular, and maybe 5 times as long east-west (ie between avenues) as north-south (between streets), so going block by block across town can take longer.
