Hi

I have made an appointment to have my 15 year old collie but to sleep next week which i am absolutely dreading. I can't get the idea out of my head that i'm killing her.

She is on both Rimadyl and Tramadol for pain relief and has the maximum dose available. She seems to have built up a tolerance to the pills now and spends a fair amount of her time whining. She can't walk that well and has lost a fair amount of weight.

This sounds so silly but would she understand that we were doing whats best for her?

How do you cope with this kind of thing?

Will she feel pain?

If i can't be in the room when the vet administers the injection does that make me bad?

I can imagine that my question smay sound immature and childish but this is the first time that i have ever had to do this, i feel so sick inside and wretched at the thought. I do have another dog a Staffie and i'm wondering how she will adjust.

Any thoughts, feedback would be appreciated

thanks jules77 for the back up.

terambulan - how you could even say something like that is really quite shocking.

tupps has been checked over by the vet regularly also this week - they have confirmed that she is ok being that she is not in pain.

maybe before you judge - yopu should read the posts carefully!!

i love my dog more than anythign else - if she was actually in pain, she would not be here now - i am not a heartless cow.

ok she is on pills, but she is not actually in agony!

So sad, my little fluffy girl is going to the vet tomorrow, this time tomorrow to be precise - feel so sick to the stomach.
She's having a nice chicken dinner tonight. Well pieces of chicken anyway.
At the moment, i'm holding up. Just hope i am brave enough to be there with her tomorrow.

Thank you to you all for caring xxxxxxxx
tiggy my heart goes out to you be strong , you are putting her first if you werent you would be letting her struggle on you have done your best for her for 15 years and this is the last thing you can do to help her, it hurts so much but in a few weeks you will know that you have done the right thing and the best thing for her i will think of you in the morning , try and let your staffie see her after she is gone.as this will help her and she wont look for her ,hugs to you all ruth xxx

We've just got back home, my girl went on very peacefully.
I held her little paw while she was passing on and told her how much i love her.
I'm glad that i was with her.

Love you Tuppie xxxx
i am so glad you found the strength to be there as i am sure you would have regreted not being there .time is a great healer and the good memories will in time replace the memory of today ,i hope your staffie is ok she is bound to miss her so you will have to make her feel extra special for a while when we lost our dog in april cassie was weeks before she would stay out in the gaden on her own even with the patio doors open i am dreading the next couple of weeks as cassie doesnt like bangs ,muppet never bothered about them so cassie was very brave when she went outside with her but this time she will have me .love to you all and a cuddle for staffie ruth xxx
I've been thinking of you all week. I am glad you found the strength to be with your girl right to the end. You've got 15 years of lovely happy memories

She was very brave and looked as if the whole thing was easy for her so i guess in her own little way she was ready.
The house is just so strange without her in it.
I'm sure sometimes they are ready and the fact it all went so peacefully makes it easier to bear the pain. How is your staffie coping ? give her a big cuddle from me xx
hi tiggy how are you all today how is staffie what is her name i am glad you were there and she went peacefully it was the best for both of you. you gave her 15 wonderful years , love ruth xxx

Lil seems to be ok, she's not eating much right now but hopefully that will pass in a day or two, she's also not her usual boysterious self either.
She sat in the middle of the hallway at the weekend and kept looking towards the wall at something that wasn't there.
dont you believe there was nothing there dogs are far more sensitive then most of us, your old girl has only gone in body she is still about you just cant see her. my pony had garlic every day in his feed ,the morning after he was put to sleep , there was an overwelming smell of garlic in my kitchen for about a couple of minuets then it just went my son turned to me and said its just sam mum letting you know hes not gone far ,after my dad died every time i went to my mums, after i had been there a little while, a scented smell would come it would last a few minuets then go ,then 1 day when we were cleaning out some drawers she found his after shave as soon as we took the lid off we both knew what the smell was it didnt come again , lil will pick up hopefully soon, cassie still has miserable days now and again ,how do you feel, any better ? i hope so will speak to you soon

Thanks Ruthann, i feel a little better now about putting her to sleep i'm still very pre-occupied at the moment. I overslept this morning which i haven't done for ages. I had a bad moment when i registered that she wasn't there. She used to wake me in the morning.

It helped that she went so peacefully - i managed to hold her little paw when she went and i'm so pleased that i did.

The rainbow bridge poem is quite a helper also, the thought that Tupps is well again and running etc is great.
