Hi tillyh,

If she sticks with it,it will work, but she has got to want to come off of the drugs, you can't force her, she has also got to remember for the rest of her life she is one step away from getting hooked again, like an alcholic is one drink away from it, she must also stay away from the people that supplied her, she has got to realise that these aren't friends, they are scum, I really do wish her well, Ray
Drugs are bad
i work in a pharmacy where methadone is dispensed. in my experience methadone is quite a long term treatment. quite often patients are on it for years but sometimes you'll get a patient who really is determined to stop their addiction and they can slowly reduce their daily dose of methadone and eventually stop but still takes a good few weeks/months.there is an alternative treatment to methadone now though called subutex.it comes in a tablet form which again it needs to be taken daily.i've seen people finish their treatment a lot quicker on subutex.quite impressive after watching the drawn out methadone treatment.maybe your niece could enquire with her GP about it but as already said she also needs to be strong because people do go through the hell of withdrawal just to go back on heroin again. staying away from friends that are still users is a definite must -just takes a moment of weakness in the wrong company.
i do know of someone who scccessfully beat their drug habit using methadone,

Thankyou for the constructive advice- AND FOR THE OTHER COMMENT Yes I think we are aware drugs are BAD!!
I have no experience of helping someone off drugs but I do know that even more dangerous than the actual drugs is the thing that drove her to it in the first place.

Whatever her problems are, they will still be there, but with little or no buffer. So I guess counselling or similar is just as important.

I do wish you all lots of luck and I hope it works.
Methadone is the standard treatment for getting off drugs.
There is lots and lots of experience in this and it has been around for 50 years or so.

Basically it staves off withdrawal but doesnt give you a high.

If it fails the person goes back to being a drug addict as before, which is kinda the state she was in before the methadone - stealing relatives goods and pawning them, prostitution and so on

it's not as tho' - my god if the methadone doesnt work, she'll go splat!

If she goes back to drugs, dont let her in your house.
Methadone is good as a crutch but most experts agree it really doesn't help much. While she's on it she needs to be in an intense 12 step program preferably in patient
