I don't think it neccessarily has to be religion but a type of national service for all 17-18 year olds where they can learn some respect not only for others but also for themselves would be a damn good idea ie; working with the old or infirm , working overseas in third world country , working as a nurse. there are a lot more good people in this world than bad but with a little education and support there could be even more good people

I agree with terambulan.
Johnny's idea makes some sense, but why saddle genuinely nice folk who do these helpful jobs anyway, with the scum that roam our streets? I'd send them off to a deserted island and leave them to rot. Sorry.

i don't think religion is to blame for the downturn in society. And yes parents are responsible for instilling respect. Whilst years ago folk where afraiad of the religious we must also remember that a lot of these religious abused childrenin their care and out of fear many were afraid to speak up. This fear created a wall of silence around abuse.
The down turn is from the shift in the whole basis of society away from a family centered to economic society. Nowadays most familys are geographically dispersed, both parents work and so children do not have the same input from consistent caregivers that instills respect and structure

I have to say - that was well thought out pink. I agree with you, but despair at those who've been indoctinated by the press and government, and really believe that money and material possessions come before caring for their families. tbh, i think it's more important now than it's ever been, for children to have constant love and support from a parent/s, and women should have the option of staying at home and looking after them properly, instead of being forced out to work. Surely they could be paid a proper wage, and taxed, by the powers that be, and then come off benefits?

i think it is good we have moved away from a religious led society where single parenthood, divorce, homosexuality, abortion were all abhorred, Not that I agree with them but the religious officers also encouraged women to stay with husbands who beat them and continue to procreate. I mean contraception was not allowed to prevent pregnancy in ireland until late 1970's. Whilst at the same time these religious personnel themselves were involved in homosexual relationships and sexual and physical abuse of children. Their positions of power allowed this remain hidden.
Childrearing practices in the families at these times also favoured corporal punishment and total obedience to parents. Again child abuse was not recognised and too many children suffered or fled home at 18 only to repeat the cycle. The best place for children to learn the rules of any society is from their parents and families. It is then the role of school to enhance these skills

it is better for children today that the practices of corporal punishment and obedience are no longer as prevalent . Aas you say ice children need to be free to develop in to who they are meant to be but this freedom is monitored by a consistent caring parent who can guide them . It is great that adults now listen to children,

It's not the government's fault if children turn out badly ziggy - all to do with home environment and how much love and care they receive from their parents and extended family. What the government HAS done, is to allow young single parents to move into properties that were designated for couples who couldn't afford to buy. Then they allowed them to claim benefits - and now are doing a u-turn and want these people out at work. It DOESN'T work.
