I am trying to find my dissertation question I would like to do : The negative effects that television and film have on Children aged 7-13 years. My tutor at universiy says that he feels this will be fine especially if I concentrate on the violence and sexual behaviours.

I just wondered what people thought is this question a good question to look at or is it goin to be a hard one due to the amount of research already out there?!

Any help or advice would be great
Thanks

It's very rare for a university dissertation not to quote from previous research so, from your point of view, 'the more, the merrier' would seem to be a good thing! (My own dissertation required me to translate a great deal of German, which was written in a form used several centuries ago and which even native German speakers found difficulty in reading. That was because I chose to examine an area of mathematics where there were very few existing sources. Your task ought to be a lot easier!).

However, I still think that your tutor should be sacked if he/she has actually accepted a proposed title like "The Negative Effects of Television on Children Aged 7 to 13". That pre-supposes the outcome of your research!

If your dissertation is to be unbiased, you surely need to consider the views of those people who think that the negative effects are greatly exaggerated as well as considering whether the possible positive effects of television (such as engendering 'multi-culturalism' among children who live in predominantly white, middle-class areas) could possibly balance up with, or even outweigh, the negative effects. I suggest re-titling your dissertation to something like, "Friend or Foe? Television and Children in the Middle Years of Schooling".

i did mine on this, and the only problem i had was cutting it down!
there are so many factors and so many theories and research it was hard to keep it all together... it was tempting to want to mention lots of factors as many are relevant and linked, but obviously its better to choose a few main points and focus in depth rather than lightly note lots of factors.

as buenchico said the more the merrier in terms of info.
thank you guys i really like your suggestion of a title Chris. thanks again.
i couldn't agree more with chris's suggestion for a title. u do need to show that u r not bias and consider both sides. its always better to have to much information rather than too little. my dissertation was made up of quotes and references from other peoples work. just make sure that your dissertation will answer something that other research hasn't. there is no point writing a new study and proving your results if other researchers have already answered the questions before hand. try and find a gap in current research and use this as your justification for the need of your study. also before u committ, ensure that u will be able to obtain your data easily and enough of it to support your arguement. a few people on my course had fantastic ideas but when it came to the data collection struggled to answer their study question. good luck
Dear, your professors feeling is correct enough for your dissertation question. You should select a specific topic for your dissertation. While doing your dissertation you should focus on the problem and the solution for that problem, so dont go with all the negative effects of TV and Film because in this way you would be grumbled in many general symptoms related to the personality and class of each set of children.

E.g. children group of higher, middle or lower income family, the effects and symptoms will totally be different. So select few or one concrete problem and start researching the implications and remedies for those problems. In this way your dissertation would be considerable and reachable for completion. Than you could also formalize that which problem is most intensive and frequent according to the subject.

If you talk about the specific problems than you could broaden yourself by considering internet and other media along with TV and Films. And you can find out which media is largely contributing for these problems.

Be careful on the perfect methodology and selection of Dissertation Titles and Topics, some of the tips could be find out on following links.
