It must be horrible to have a battle axe for a mother-in-law mrs_o, I never got to meet mine as she died when my husband was just 14.

I must say that that my mother in law,who's 9 months younger than my mother,widowed for 25 years,lost a daughter to Crohns (when Linda was in early 20's) & has diabetis, is so much more positive than my mum,though far less well off money wise,hard to understand my old dear,who's been 'lucky' enough not to've needed to work for a living,pos part of the prob,

if i forget my mum is my mum,we get on ok,she leads my dads' life too,but he's not jumped ship yet after 56 years,mothers & wives, better the devils you know
