To watch your tv in HD format you need a HD input, currently available in limited form via Sky and Virgin, and via freeview from late next year.

If you have a blu ray or hd dvd player and a blu ray or hd dvd disk, these will play in HD format on your tv

Thanks Ethel, wish I knew this before I bought the tele 'cos I don't have Sky, Virgin or any other cable supplier. Haven't got blu ray or HD DVD disk so I will have to wait to get it via freeview later next year.
Hi missprim
The easiest and cheapest way of watching HD is to purchase Freesat HD box 149.99 at Argos, However there are not many programmes yet broadcast in HD mainly BBC1 & 2. but it is great to watch. There are no further costs such as monthly subscriptions.
The only other way to watch is very expensive, you have to get Sky to install a complete system with dish & HD Box then pay 10 per month for the priveledge, plus if you want the full range of HD programmes such as sport and/or films your subscriptions will rocket.
Hope this helps. johntaylor99

Thanks John I'm off to look in my Argos Catalogue. There seem to be so many different types of equipment it gets very confusing.A friend of mine has bought a PVR I think this stands for Personal Video Recorder where you can record whole series of programmes etc and she told me I should get one but it all gets too technical for me.

Hi John Just had a look at the Freesat HD box from Argos and it says 'This product needs a fully installed working satellite dish to operate'.
Yes, FreeSat stands for Free Satellite

I love my PVR and can highly recommend it - it is a whole lot easier than any video recorder I ever had.
Press the 'programme guide' button and you get all the channels and programmes on your screen in an easy to read grid format.
Use the button to highlight the programme you want, press the record button and that is it.

So Freesat means once you have the dish installed there are no further payments?
It stills costs quite a bit though to buy a Freesat box and a satellite dish.
Can you watch HD through your PVR Ethel?
I probably sound really thick but all I want to do is watch the programmes that are vailable in HD format and to record any programme on any of the freeview channels. The freeview is already in the tele.
