An ipod is a teeny tiny pod home. Inside are two teeny tiny pod people. One plays the keyboards, and the other can imitate drum noises with his mouth. You feed in the sound output from your computer, and the teeny tiny pod people learn the tunes quick as a flash (they have perfect pitch), so that they can play them for you when you are out jogging, or riding on the tube.

Never shake or drop your ipod as this can cause them severe injuries.

Later versions use goblins, and are classified with terms like " a 6Gb ipod" which means it has 6 goblins. The 40Gb model is not recommend as when goblins get together in large crowds, they tend to get drunk and party into the small hours.

Rojash, when I finally stopped laughing I realised what you remided me of!

(Quote from The Light Fantastic:)

"...The iconoscope didn't take pictures by letting light fall onto specially treated paper, as he [Rincewind] had surmised, but by the far simpler method of imprisoning a small demon with a good eye for colour and a speedy hand with a paintbrush. He had been very upset to find that out."

NetSquirrel, I am deeply offended. It took me hours to research this answer which was given in good faith. Are you saying it's not correct then?
I would like to complain about Rojash's answer. Like many readers I took this answer in good faith, and spent the best part of my Sunday morning dismantling my brother's ipod to find if this were true. It is not. The ipod is in fact made up of small electrical circuits, transistors, a battery, a microchip, and a small plastic disk, all of which are currently nestling at the bottom of my biscuit tin, leaving me with an angry perplexed brother searching high and low for his 'goblin machine.'
