Could anyone tell me what is the best thing to use to get polish off of plastic trim ?

have you tried 'back to black' ?

Yes. Brings it up nice for a while, but then as it wears off the polish on the plastic shows through.

i use dashboard cleaner from halfords to stop the glare from the dashboard when its sunny, gives a good matt finish,

I use boot blacking polish if it`s only a little bit. I`ve thought of printers ink from an empty cartridge but am waiting to run out.
