You can if you want but it still won't work as you have got rid of all the refrigerant.

Could get hot and blow the electrics or worse.

I bet you won't do it again.
This is a bit of a 'depends' question. If your fridge and freezer have seperate ccoling circuits, the fridge will still work (as I'm assuming its the freezer you've knackered). If this is the case, switch off the freezer bit and the fridge should still work. However, nowadays most fridge freezers have common circuits and pump, so the fluid/gas could be being pumped out of the whole thing. You will soon know, as the fridge will start warming up and can even turn into an oven effect! If in doubt (and probably the best course of action anyway) switch the whole lot off and keep you perishables somewhere cool (garage?, shed?).
ROFL i done the exact same thing one night when i had came back from the supermarket with stupid amounts of freezer goods, i spent a fortune, couldnt get it all in to the freezer so decided to chip away some ice with a knife LOL yep hissing i ran for my life out the front door shouting to my then husband to do something lol just by luck his dad had just bought a new freezer and had the old one in the garage....saved sorry for the long post
Dear eileenb, been there, did the same, put it down to experience! Not quite the end of the world, eh? Worse if you`re a Georgian in Ossetia.
I used to struggle with pans of hot water and chipping away etc etc but I have finally seen the light.

My daughters hair dryer (when she's not looking) does the job a treat
