What a wondetrful portrayal of britains most prolific hangman, Timothy Spall was outstanding, and Juliet Stevenson as his wife, briliant as his money grabbing wife, wish we could have programmes of this calibre!!!!

I've just been reading on Google about him. Quite interesting but like you say it doesn't mention children or how old his wife was when he married her. Looked for repeats but cant find it anywhere, or may have already been repeated if it was on Monday?
Pierrepoint kept his sanity by keeping a personal distance from the criminal,

He worried that if he knew too much about the criminal, it would become personal,

Hanging his mate Ethel, it does't get much more personal than that..
That is very true - and he didn't know about it beforehand.

It was his professionalism that pushed him to carry it out, and really to refuse would have been very cruel to his mate. His execution would have been delayed and that must be intolerable.

That was the beginning of his decision to resign, I feel. It was very hard for him.
His friend asked for Mr Pierrepoint to be his executioner.

Did i hear right that some relation was also a hangman?????, if so must be genetic!!!!
Spanner, you can buy it on DVD
Puddicat - it was quite common for the sons of hangmen to take on their father's positions as they could train as apprentices first and then take over when their fathers got too old to do the job any more. His father Henry was also an executioner, as was his uncle Thomas
