Can anybody give me some ideas for dressing up as a character from literature? Male and female character suggestions are welcome.

Sorry! I wasn't very clear - male or female character suggestions are welcome, though thanks for all those ideas!
Well you could choose either of all those.

Any preference for era or genre?
The White Rabbit or, indeed, almost any character from Alice - either Wonderland or Looking-Glass. There are great descriptions and images to work from.

Dracula

Depending on the age of the dresser-up, how about Dorian Grey, before or after?
george Sand

and or Chopin

g Sand was a woman by the way

I don't have any preferences for era - just something I could get a costume together for in a week or two!
Dorothy from The Wizrd of OZ??? Or any of the characters.
Mrs haversham, all you need is an old wedding dress!
My wife was in Florida and saw lots of similar and familiar white-bearded men; turns out it was the annual Ernest Hemingway look-a-like competition. Next day she saw lots of similar young men to find that was the young Ernest Hemingway look-a-like competition. Failing that, how about the "insect" from Kafka? You could metamorphose as the drink cut in or cut to the chase, go as F Scott Fitzgerald and arrive drunk.
