No, Naomi, what I am suggesting is that everyone is treated equitably. If one religious group have certain rights, then shouldn't another.

Of course, English Law must always reign supreme, but I see no harm in allowing most civil matters to be dealt with by Sharia courts if both parties agree.

So if a woman doesn't feel that she will get a result in a Sharia court, then she will not agree to use it.

If she does feel that it is right to use it, then she can have that option.

I must be honest, my knowledge of Sharia Law is very limited, however, so long as no English Laws are broken, where lies the problem?

Of course, you could use the argument that women may be scared to say no to her husband or even her peers - and to be honest, I don't know if that is a big problem.
Yes, all religious groups should be treated equally, and in theory that's quite right, but if the playing field isn't level and they don't all behave in the same way, then we have a problem. I would argue that there is a very real danger that Muslim women will do as they're told, so by agreeing to the introduction of Sharia law here, would we be damning them to less than fair treatment? It's all very well to say there's no harm in Sharia courts dealing with civil matters if both parties agree, but that means we are imposing our terms upon such courts. Sharia law is Sharia law, and frankly I can't see any changes that we would want to see imposed being acceptable to either the courts, or to the Muslim community.
