My daughter's 9 week old baby started with a rash on her face which she has had for about a week now - locum doctor says could be eczema or allergy and suggested moisturiser and Oilatum for bath. Thursday last it had spread to over her head and I wondered if it was prickly heat? Today she informs me that it is slightly less on her face but is now on her body - any ideas - afraid I cannot remember that far back!!!! I seem to recall my Mother saying that rashes tend to travel down the body and out the feet but this could be just an old wive's tale. Can anyone come up with some suggestions to put her mind at rest please?

My 11 week old has similar at moment. I recall it from when my son was tiny and with him its was a mixture of eczema and heat rash.

It started on chin and cheeks and then spread down to neck and then chest with the occasional bit in the folds of skin at elbows and knees.

Im using aqueous cream which helps a bit with the small rash areas but the eczema is a bit flakey. Shes not showing signs of any illness so im just keeping an eye on it.

Babies cant move to get air circulating around them and often get hot and sweaty in these areas, causing a heat rash.

OR it could be a little viral rash and perhaps shes picked up a light bug, if she shows any further signs of illness then Im sure your daughter will take her back to GP for further advice.

I hope it clears up soon.
oh and just in case, avoid using baby wet wipes on her face. just water and dry thoroughly

Thanks for such a quick response - will try and put my daughter's mind at ease!
haha Freda, its a mummys job to worry though as you know.

if its any help a viral or heat rash is often very very tiny pink dots.
Hi Freda, my little one had heat rash on her face and shoulders when she was about 4weeks, and now she is 12weeks (tomorrow!) in the humid weather the past few days she has a little on her face again.

I found it appeared in the places that got sweaty - at 4weeks she was forever being cuddled by visitors and falling asleep on the chest getting ever so hot, the rash was always worse on the side she had been sleeping. The HV told me not to bath her more than once a week and to cotton wool and warm water wash her face daily, which I did but I started to notice that by bathing her her skin started to clear up so I would bath her every evening, and after 4-5 days it was completely clear. It also helped us get into a routine and ever since then she has had her bath every evening and is in bed asleep by 7pm.

Phew! That was a bit long-winded! Either way, I know it is common for little ones to get a bit spotty and I am sure it is nothing to worry about as long as you can keep her skin clean and dry :-)

Congratulations by the way!
Babies often get a "milk rash", all mine did, so it could be that...

Its pretty common, and nothing to worry about
